LOST

So last week (I think) my awesome cousin lent me her copy of LOST, season one. Yes, I’ve never seen the show before excluding one time when I saw maybe ten minutes of sweaty, dirty, frantic people running around in a jungle screaming. My impression of it was: “God, why does everyone love this show? I mean it’s about a bunch of people stranded on an island for five seasons.”

Everyone I knew who watched it loved it, namely my third or fourth grade teacher. She would come in the class and tell us all how she had been watching Lost, how it was great and all that. At the age of ten, I wasn’t impressed. Well, I am now. Although the plot so far is just frantic people running around screaming on an island, it’s frantic people with strange, dramatic pasts running around screaming on an island filled with weird secrets and creepy people, which is somewhat better. The first episode brings you in, and keeps your interest the whole while. I found I was asking myself why the episodes were so short. Well, they felt short. The whole season simply blew me and my high expectations away.

The first season (which I finished in maybe two weeks) was great, maybe a little too dramatic at times, but overall, great. The episodes focussed mainly on people’s uncannily freakish pasts full of murders, lies, romance, deception, and most of all, odd coincidences… yep, all of that hollywood stuff. The people are as diverse as a doctor, a lottery winner and an interrogator who’s main weapon is torture. Yes, it does push it sometimes, but it’s still an entertaining watch.

I’m on the second season now, but don’t spoil it for me, I haven’t started it yet. I think I’m too worried that once I start watching it, I won’t stop, which really doesn’t sound that awful. (It happened during the first season) Anyway, it’s a nice show, entertaining, heart-pounding, and just plain freaky at times. I’m not quite sure how Lost has spanned five seasons, but I’m sure I’ll learn the answer to that soon, and I bet I won’t be displeased. (;

“A plague o’ both your houses! They have made worms’ meat of me.”

Some of you, no, a bunch of you might be wondering about the title of my post. Yeah, it’s kind of funny sounding, but it’s just a random quote from Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. (The first sentence might have made that a bit obvious, I’m not too sure about the second.) Well, it’s a line said by Mercutio sadly before he is killed, but let’s not focus on the dying part, just the Mercutio part.

As many of you might know now, we are buying a bird on friday. We have thought of many names, but one (offered by Bella) has been my favorite: Mercutio. There arises a problem, though. Since the bird we are getting is a baby, we don’t know the bird’s sex. Up until, I think, adulthood, birds remain quite androgynous. Males have bright orange cheek patches and yellow faces, females have duller markings. Now you can see that we have a problem, since Mercutio is distinctly a he. You see, it’s hard to name a bird such a genderishly constraining name–It’s not like we’re naming the bird Bobby/Bobbi, or Ashley. (Haha, yes, Ashley is also a guy’s name… just read Gone With the Wind) Well, we’re just gonna hope for a boy, I suppose. We can always call it Merry if it isn’t, I suppose.

Anyway, I can’t wait for our little birdy wirdy (as Bella says) to come home. Even though I had a bird (Louie, rest in peace), I decided to read up on birds yet again to go over anything I forgot or missed. Turns out, there’s a ton of stuff I forgot/missed. I read up until 2 ish a couple nights ago, and I’m feeling like a very prepared mother. :O

One more topic I’d like to address, the bird journal. I’m pretty sure Gabby did this with Louie, and I was thinking of doing it here, with all of us. Bella voiced my idea already; great minds think alike, right? Well I have a bunch of really cool ideas for it, so… don’t get too excited and keep checking back.

Lastly, on a more philosophical note, has anyone ever thought about worm’s meat? I know it’s the meat of a worm, but it’s just such an odd phrase. What is it’s purpose? Why does Mercutio say worm’s meat? Why not some other, more pleasant type of meat? Do worms really have meat, or is it just fat? Tell me your interpretations, friends.

lol. um you might realize that merry is the name of a certain HE in the lord of the rings, so if we name the bird merry it could be a unisex name. buut if we think the bird’s a girl, it can be mary, and if it’s a boy, it could be merry. along with other unisex/androgynousy names. but i want to name it something very powerful sounding. As some of you might have noticed, I have finally updated the blog’s header. I know, what a relief! Yesterday, if you were reading the blog anywhere from 10:30-11:00, you were probably very confused since I couldn’t decide on a header. Well, I’ve been stuck deciding between two, so if any of you want to help, please post comment, and/or ‘vote’ on which one I should use. And yes, I know, the current header is fuzzy. :O

The Sims 3 (MAC/PC)

A note: I am still not quite finished with this review, but I figured I’d post it anyway since I haven’t been on, and to explain the reason why. ;)
As soon as it came out-no, as soon as it was announced-I was hooked. The Sims 3. The newest addition to the long line of Sims products. There was the Sims 2, The Sim City, Sim Animals and more; but nothing could compare to the newest, grandest, Sims 3.
Call me obsessed, but like many other captivated Sims fans, I bought it the week of it’s release and I was not disappointed. As some of you might know, this version of the ever-popular Sims franchise is quite an improvement. I was extremely surprised once I had played it for a week or so. The new additions and improvements are so immense in my opinion that they make it seem more like a Sims 4 or maybe even 5.
New improvements of the Sims 3:

  • YOU CAN MAKE YOUR SIM GO ANYWHERE THEY WANT
  • Much more detailed sims, houses, surroundings and other objects
  • Your sims now have opportunities that they can accomplish for rewards; such as fixing a neighbors shower, tutoring a child in chess, and so on.
  • Create a Sim is much more detailed; hair, eyes, and clothes have more customized options. Additionally, your sims now have personalities that affect game play. You can choose from traits like daredevil, Kleptomaniac, Athletic and more.
  • Objects as well as clothes can now be applied with any color or pattern you could wish for.
  • Your sims now have a lifetime wish such as a rockstar, international spy, having a perfect garden, and more.
  • A new feature, story-mode, enables the whole  town to age with your current sim. People will move in, move out, have children and promotions.
  • Options to customize your sims’ body shape and skin color

See what I mean? These are great new additions that just leave the Sims 2 behind in the dust. One of the most important new features, as I am sure many of you know of, is the lack of the ubiquitous loading screen when your current sim moves out of it’s lot. The programmers decided to get rid of the annoying nuisance, and I believe they decided well. This and Story-mode makes the game not only about your current sim/household, but focusses the game on the whole town 24/7.
And with all of these new achievements comes, well, more achievements: Now your sims have portable items, such as cars, bikes, laptops and cell phones which help to keep the whole idea of ‘the city is your playground’ alive. Cell phones act just like normal phones with one extra feature, a camera! Your sim can take pictures which will happily find their way into the sim’s inventory. Speaking of inventory, your sim can carry anything from unfinished books, produce, and rare stones, to insects and fish in their inventory. This is extremely useful with the new game play.

But enough about that, let’s start at the beginning. When you first create a sim you are given several thousands of choices. Be it what haistyle to pick, the clothes, eyes, and finally skin tone. Well, that’s a bit too general since many of the Sims 3′s predecessors had the same option, but in Sims 3, you can choose virtually any skin tone you could ever want. Finally, a color wheel has replaced the set choices for an object be it hair, skin or clothes. You can make your sims a sci fi green, creepy blue, extremely pale, dark and tan, or anything in between. As in the Sims 2, you can manipulate your sims’ facial features down to the size of their nostrils or the height of their eyelids. A new wonderful addition was the fact that you could choose most of what your sim’s body shape would look like. There are now two sliding bars that adjust muscle size as well as fat. There is a wide (and ever growing) selection of clothes for your sims to wear and enjoy as well as several fun accessories. One drawback is the sudden lack of hairstyles. I found that the Sims 2 had an ample amount of styles to choose from; dreds, buzzed, ‘fro, balding, short and cropped… but in the Sims 3, the list was sadly very short. In addition, the precious few that they offered wasn’t really that… precious. The styles were a little drab and a little boring, but noting to be too sad about.
After customizing your sim’s body and clothes, you move on to their personality. This is one of my favorite parts where you can choose their traits. Their is a long list ranging from genius to absent-mindend, technophobe to daredevil. You can also choose their favorite color, music and food, as well as the pitch, and, to an extent, the sound of their voice.
Once you have created your sims, you can move them into a house an begin your game. The gameplay is much the same as the previous sims games. You basically control your sims and maneuver them through the hardships and happy times that makes up their lives.
You can also build houses on open lots, creating anything from one-room shacks to breathtaking multi-million dollar mansions. One problem that really irks me, though is the fact that you can’t create new lots. This affects you in the long run when you are forced to either move some people out of their homes, or stop making as many sims due to the increasing lack of open houses/lots. This is one of the times where you stop and say, “Really??” I mean, it might have its purpose, but it is one of the most annoying parts of the game.
Aside from that, this game is GREAT. With immersive, detailed game play, and astounding graphics and features, this is one of the better mac games that I’ve played in my lifetime. (yes, I am a very picky mac snob :D )

overall: **** 1/2/*****

iPod Touch

Okay, first of all, Bella and Gabby both bought themselves iPod touches. Let me just say, wow! You can do so much on it, including posting on your blog. Even though I’m probably typing only ten words per minute (maybe even less) it’s just so convenient to be able to type a quick (or not so quick for me) post from the comfort of wherever you may happen to be. It really helps lazy people like me to post more often since my only real excuse is that I’m too lazy to want to get on the computer and type something up.

disneyland: an update.

Hello everyone, just like Bella said, we’re going to disneyland for our birthday. Today is the actual, wonderful day, May 7th. :) Well, we’ll be leaving sometime at nine. Wow, it’s around 8:40, it feels like a saturday, but in actuality, probably everyone I know is sitting in their second period class, already waiting for the school day to be over.

That brings up a much sadder aspect, I won’t be seeing any of my friends on my birthday. I guess a plus side is that I’ll be going back to school tomorrow and then I can tell them how everything went, but its just a nice little plus when your friends are there to cheer for you, congratulate you, and most of all… give you gifts! Haha, I’m kidding there, but anyway, I think you all understand what I’m saying, and hoepfully agree with me.

But anyway, I can’ wait since the last time I went was years ago. It just occurred to my mom that you have free admission on your birthday, so we can’t possibly pass up the chance, after all, when can you take your three daughter to Disneyland? The price is so expensive for one person, let alone three.

Well wish us luck, I guess, and if anyone is on (which I doubt) right now, please give me a few tips, comments, or maybe suggestions on rides, because as you know, I haven’t been in so long.

Other than that, let’s just talk about the birthday part of today. Well, like most things this year, my birthday creeped up on me without me realizing it. Suddenly, BLAM! it was three days before my birthday and I really had no idea what I wanted or what my sisters wanted. Don’t you hate when this happens? It happened at Halloween, and Christmas, and numerous times with several school projects. I only have a vague  idea of what I want even though today is my special, awesome birthday. Well, I won’t delve into my selfish desires and whatnot, I’ll just dab in a little bit. :)

This year, I got all selfishly materialistic. Yes, that means the whole: “I want a laptop, itouch, xbox, ps3, blah, blah, blah…”  Well, actually all I want is the laptop and itouch. You know, everyone really wants an itouch, I think. I don’t want it that much, now that I think about it… but that only shows you how indecisive I am. Bleh.

Well, I must be off to eat and stuff. Goodbye, and wish me luck today!

siena’s post #1; greetings.

Wow. I have to think of a witty way of beginning.

Well, I suppose I could start at the beginning, that is, the beginning of this website. It all started as a simple idea, and one word. Ya Manyak. Inspirations like these only happen randomly and for no real reason, and this was the case for us. As we were spazzing out at 10 at night, we were struck with this brilliant word, which formed into a brilliant idea. We actually followed our gut (or rather guts) this time, and created Ya Manyaks For the Win.

And I guess that’s all there is to it. Moving on.

Hello, my name is Siena. I suppose you could say that I’m the co-creator of YYFTW. I prefer to say that instead of Ya Manyaks For the Win. It get so tiring, and so unbelievably annoying to see that ‘ya’ happens to be a word, but the spell check can’t accept ‘manyak’ as real word. Bluh. Anyway, I was, without my knowing, selected as the graphics go-to person. Unfortunately, I don’t have much to show for my position yet, other than the little author icons I created for each author of YYFTW. Each one portrays strong characteristics of each person (I hope).

I am currently working on some banners etc, for the site as well as just plain old posts which happen to be my weaker point. Let’s see… I have some possible big and not-so-big plans for this site some ideas are:

-possible tutorials

-updates on banners etc

-banners/headers for people

-maybe a contest or two?

If you have suggestions, please comment. :)

Siena. OUT.
